The word “mediator” comes from the Latin and means intermediary, go-between.
In our mortal life, there are occasions such as in business, when buying or renting a house or a car, and also in conflicts, when we need a mediator.
In order to be successful in the mediation process, the mediator must be neutral, fair, impartial, and needs to ensure that none of the parties involved have their rights violated.
As part of the plan of happiness, the Lord has provided an earthly life for us. Our birth is the result of the choice we made before and is a very important step in our eternal progression.
Our mortal life, limited by time, is short and it gets shorter with each passing day. And yet, it is essential to our salvation, as it allows us to make daily choices that can either bring us closer to our Heavenly Father or take us further away from him.
We learn from King Benjamin that “the natural man is an enemy to God and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever (…); unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit” (Mosiah 3:19). By our efforts alone, in our carnal nature, and without help, we cannot achieve the purpose of this life.
We are constantly being drawn by two opposing forces, one that entices us to do good and the other that entices us to do evil. “Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he should act for himself. Wherefore, man could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the other” (2 Nephi 2:16).
The Lord knows perfectly well the challenges of this mortal life. He knows our weaknesses and our strengths, He knows that in this process of choices we will make mistakes and that is why he has provided a mediator.
“For there is [only] (...) one mediator between God and men” (1 Timothy 2:5). This mediator is Jesus Christ, he is the mediator of our covenants with the Father. It is through him that we come to our Heavenly Father.
Christ “is the mediator of a better covenant” (Hebrews 8:6). This covenant allows the demands of justice and the demands of mercy to be met.
Thanks to the atonement of Jesus Christ, who interceded for our sins, we have the opportunity to repent and fulfill all the requirements of the covenant. He made the deal possible.
Our Lord in his infinite wisdom gave us one day at a time, separated into periods of 24 hours; each day is a new day, a new opportunity, a rebirth.
We can ponder our actions at the end of each day, we can bring to the Lord, in humble prayer, our daily efforts, our challenges, give thanks, and ask for his help for the new day. Every day is a rebirth, we have a new opportunity to choose what’s right and to be a little better than we were the day before.
In addition to our Master Jesus Christ, our eternal Supreme Mediator, the Lord knows that as part of the plan, there are times in our lives when we need to have other mediators who are close by. So he restored His church in these latter days on the foundation of prophets and apostles who hold all the priesthood keys and local leaders to help us.
Above all, I know that our greatest mediator is our Savior Jesus Christ. What a wonderful blessing it is to know, to feel that through sincere repentance we can be made free from our sins.
I know that even if all things fail in our own lives, even if we are wronged or persecuted, even unto death, our mediator Jesus Christ will not fail. I put all my trust in him. I know he will ensure and guarantee that all of our rights, blessings and privileges will be safeguarded at the end and we will be victorious. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
