A Walk for Peace

On Saturday 12th October 2019 members from Wakefield and Horbury wards, Huddersfield Stake, joined with around 50 members of the local ‘faiths forum’ on a walk for peace.

On route they were welcomed into various church venues including Wakefield Cathedral, West Wakefield Methodist Church, Wakefield Central Mosque, as well as the Wakefield chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on Horbury Road.

Bishop Tony Burnett of the Horbury Ward spoke and said, “What a privilege it is to join with other faiths in the Wakefield area, to take part in today’s walk for peace.  As different faiths we may have different beliefs but, to quote the late Jo Cox former MP for Batley and Spen constituency, ‘We are far more united and have far more in common with each other, than things that divide us.’”

He added, “This is certainly the case when it comes to peace, and it is the reason we are here today, united in our quest for peace.  As Christians we look to Jesus Christ who taught ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God’ (Matthew 5:9)’”.

After his remarks the assorted gathering of Baptists, Anglicans, Methodists, Muslims, Pagans, Quakers, and even the Mayor of Wakefield shared refreshments, looked around the Chapel and discussed similarities and differences amongst these ‘friends of faith’.
